NATO speaks against referendum and elections in South Ossetia

As NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer stated he was not going to recognize outcomes of the referendum on South Ossetias independence. He stressed that such actions might lead only to new disorders in the region, Associated Press informs cited by the International Herald Tribune. At that, the Alliances secretary general called on Georgia and South Ossetia to find a peaceful way out of the situation. The international community, including NATO, has strongly and continuously reaffirmed its support for the territorial integrity of Georgia. I call on all sides to act in good faith to conduct negotiations towards achieving a political settlement, he stressed.
Earlier, the US State Department stated it would not recognize the referendum on South Ossetian independence either.
