That was one of the bad effects of the North's victory in the US Civil War: concentration of too much power in DC.

The US has undergone too much centralization for its own good. In Canada, most of your taxes go to the provincial, not the federal, government. The health care system, for example, is administered by the provinces.

Why Texas has to be tied to Maine, or Maryland closely bound to Oregon, is inexplicable without acknowledging the post-1865 power grab by the feds.

No one thought the Soviet Union would disappear. The Russians seem to be better off without it. Maybe the US should vanish also.
