Attaining 20% in the US would be a significant achievement, probably impossible.
At the current time, with the current...national mindset...you are probably correct. However, the national mindset can and does change over time. I suspect that in twenty or thirty years, it will seem 'natural' and 'normal' to the mindset of the time that something on the order of half of all electrical power comes from the likes of wind, hydro, and solar.

So, for the purposes of this discussion, a more interesting question who is behind the trashing of Pickens and his plan and what are their interests.
I find myself wondering about this as well.

Actually, I find myself repeatedly asking myself: 'Just what alternative the people who oppose wind and/or solar power have in mind?' Do they wish to live in the perpetual cloud of toxic fumes (aka China) that would be generated by coal driven power plants? Do they really believe that natural gas is infinite or bountiful? Or do they wish to see the landscape dotted with ever more nuclear powerplants?
